Think about your childhood for a moment. 

Who did you turn to when you were confused, scared, excited, or proud?

And where was the place you felt most comfortable being yourself?

Now imagine a child growing up on the streets.

Who do they turn to when they are struggling? Where do they go when they need safety, comfort, or simply a place to rest?

Across India, many children growing up in and around railway stations, informal settlements, and public spaces navigate childhood without a trusted adult consistently present in their lives. Not because they do not need support, but because no one has had the time, patience, and consistency to sit beside them and truly walk with them through life.

At the same time, many of these children lack safe and welcoming spaces where they can learn, play, rest, and simply be children.

Children in street situations are not children without potential. They are children growing up in circumstances that make it difficult to access the conditions needed to thrive. For many, education feels like a closed door, and the instability of daily life makes consistent learning almost impossible.

At Rag Dreams' Weavers Association, we believe every child deserves someone who believes in them and somewhere they belong.

That is why we work alongside street-connected children to create both.

We support young mentors in building meaningful and lasting relationships with children, relationships rooted in trust, encouragement, and care. A mentor becomes someone who listens, shows up consistently, celebrates small victories, helps children navigate challenges, and reminds them that their future matters.

We also work with children to strengthen and improve the spaces they already call their own through thoughtful design interventions. A corner beneath a tree, a gathering spot near a railway station, an unused community space, places that may seem ordinary to others but hold comfort, familiarity, and belonging for children. Together, we help make these spaces safer, more welcoming, and more supportive of learning, play, and growth.

When a child is seen by a mentor, they begin to believe in themselves.

When a child has a safe place to belong, they begin to believe they deserve safety, stability, and a future they can shape for themselves.
