Upon examination, it was found that she only had a perception of light, she could only see if there was light somewhere, but beyond that, she had no vision. We performed her cataract surgery, and after the surgery, she achieved almost 6/6 vision. Poorest of the poor elderly affected

Many elderly are neglected by their families who feel spending money on an aging parent or grandparent might be futile, often leaving them as a burden. The extent of their poverty is such that they themselves can’t dream of the treatment. “This surgery is meant only for the poorest of the poor who cannot afford to go to a town or to a hospital in town to get their surgery. Due to cataracts, their perspective on daily tasks becomes very difficult,” Singh says.

Singh recalls another case with deep concern: “Someone who could barely see her own finger and everything was blurred. Her vision had almost disappeared and had we not done anything she would have become cataract blind. We brought her into our hospital and conducted an urgent surgery and her vision improved to 6/9.”

How your donation is used

Sapna identifies elderly patients in remote rural areas who are too poor, too isolated, and too helpless to access treatment. They are brought in, examined, operated upon by qualified surgeons, and sent back home with restored vision, completely free of cost. But each surgery costs money. Surgeons must be paid. Equipment must be maintained. Medical supplies must be procured. Transportation must be arranged.

And without support, many will continue to wait in darkness.

“We are not able to perform a very high number of cataract surgeries, but I think starting from about 300 to 400 a year, we have now slowly moved on to a thousand to fifteen hundred; last year, we had about fourteen hundred surgeries. Since inception, we have performed over about 16,000 surgeries until now. You need a lot of resources, you need a lot of, you know, manpower, you need a lot of surgeons, we have to pay them a decent amount of money too. So, I request all of you to support us in this cause and help us mobilize resources so that we can perform the maximum number of cataract surgeries for the poor in rural areas.”
