Nearly 113 million children in India study in government schools. But their challenge is not access to schools anymore. Their challenge is access to their fundamental right - which is their right to quality education. A recent study conducted by ASER shows that 2 out of 4 children studying in 5th grade in government schools cannot read from a Grade 2 English textbook. Similarly, about 45% of primary grade students struggle with simple mathematical operations like division and subtraction. The gap is not in their understanding, the gap is in the way they’re being taught. There is no focus on foundational learning, where concepts are missing from their knowledge and they are only being trained to be passive rote learners.

Now, imagine if these very children are able to get the foundational learning opportunities they actually deserve. Imagine if their teachers are able to lead their classrooms the way they envision it, without the constraints of innovative resources. Imagine if all schools are joyful learning spaces, no matter where they are. 

This is what we do at Simple Education Foundation. We work on making our imagination a reality one day, for all children, all teachers and all schools everywhere in India.

And we do this by empowering those key stakeholders who are impacted the most by this gap in quality education - teachers, principals, parents and students themselves. Our whole school transformation program is called ‘Simple Schools’ and we work with government schools in low-income communities across the urban and rural landscape in North India. Our goal is to equip all our partner schools with diverse high-quality teaching and learning resources and opportunities and transform them into centers of learning excellence. Our program is immersive and in-depth as we focus on the growth of each stakeholder and the role they play in transforming their own school community.

Currently, we work with 4 government schools, impacting over 1000 children across 26 classrooms. In less than 3 years, we’ve seen our Simple Schools transform by ensuring 75% of our children are reading at grade level.
