The Blue Cross of India, houses upto 2000 sick and injured animals ranging from cattle to horses, dogs, cats and pigs, to name the majority.
While both our capital and running expenses are formidable on an overall basis, our real challenge month on month is the struggle to raise money for something as basic as nutritious food for our everhopeful residents.
Rescued horses and cattle cost a minimum of Rs 5000 a month each.
( In this category, most of our residents are likely to be lifetimers with us.)
Adult dogs and cats, most of whom have nutritional supplement / special diet need a minimum of Rs 1500 a month.
Established in 1964, Blue Cross of India is arguably India's largest animal welfare organisation having the following verticals
We have three shelters in and around Chennai which provide sanctuary & succour for 2000 animals which are supported by
a) 24 x7 ambulance services to rescue injured and sick animals from the streets of Chennai,
b) 24 X 7 hospital services for all sick and injured animals
c) Tactical rescues which need special equipment and trained professionals which is the only one of its kind in India.
c) Out-patient services for all animals at subsidised rates
d) Treatment and rehabilitation of all domesticated animals
e) Public Health Animal Birth control- Anti Rabies (ABC-AR) program
f) Save Cows from Plastic Program (Rumenotomy)
In the year 2016-17, we have
- Rescued and treated over 50,000 animals and birds
- Conducted over 8000 animal birth control surgeries for dogs and cats to control population and eradicate rabies from
the city of Chennai and surrounding municipalities
- Conducted over 400 surgeries for injured animals
- Over 2800 puppies, kittens and abandoned pedigree dogs have found homes due to our efforts
Our achievements range from the ban on export of monkeys for research; getting a ban on the export of frogs' legs; developing and getting the ABC programme accepted by the government of India which has made illegal the killing of street dogs; making Chennai the first metro in India to be rabies-free.
Developing the Compu series of interactive computer programmes as an alternative to dissection at school level; working with nine other groups to get dissection made optional at a school level.
