When Jo Chopra McGowan, an American woman living in India, adopted baby Moy Moy – born with multiple disabilities and little chance of survival – she could not have foreseen how completely their lives would transform. 

What began as an intimate journey for one family soon expanded into something far greater: the birth of Latika, a pioneering organization that supports children with developmental disabilities and their families, while also supporting its young workforce to become confident, skilled professionals.

Over the past thirty-one years, Latika has touched thousands of lives, delivering high-quality, affordable care infused with joy, compassion and dignity.

But this is not just the story of one child or one nonprofit.

It’s the story of a circle.

A circle of therapists, teachers, drivers, fundraisers, coordinators, friends. The many quiet, steady hands who made a life of dignity and joy possible for Moy Moy and her friends — and who continue that work every day.

Many of them don’t appear in program budgets. Their salaries are often labelled “admin” or “overheads.” But they are the reason any of this works at all.

This year, their story is finally in a book.

Moy Moy’s Circle, written by Suchitra Shenoy, is a luminous account of how love, care, and community came together to build something extraordinary.
