Story

Based on the vision of sustainable living of our founder Sri M, The Satsang Foundation (TSF) established two Gaushalas - one at the Madanapalle Ashram and the other at The Sacred Grove (TSF’s Wellness Centre) in Chowdepalle, Andhra Pradesh. A total of 31 indigenous Gir, Sahiwal, Rathi and Tharkapar cows are cared for in the gaushalas.

Gaushala at the Madanapalle Ashram

This was carved out of Sri M’s personal garden in September 2019 to create a loving home for 10 Gir and Sahiwal cows.

Salient Features:

-  Provides fresh milk, buttermilk, and ghee for the in-house community kitchen Madhu Ki Rasoi, which offers Annadaanam all through the year to visitors, volunteers and residents at the Ashram and students and staff of The Satsang Vidyalaya.

-   Fuels the kitchen with natural biogas, reducing usage of expensive cooking gas.

Gaushala Kshetra within The Sacred Grove

This tranquil Gaushala is Vrindavan incarnate in Chowdepalle. Canopied by Kadamba trees and pulsating with the notes of the flute, the gaushala is home to 21 Gir, Sahiwal, Rathi and Tharkapar cows.

Salient features:

- Promotes eco-friendly farming practices through calf adoption: Upholds Gau-Paalan (care and nourishment of cows) by placing year-old calves with farmers, encouraging indigenous breed preservation and sustainable agriculture.

- Revives traditional process of cold-pressed oil extraction for a healthier lifestyle.

- Contributes to ethical animal husbandry by partnering with government semen collection projects, ensuring responsible breeding practices for cows.

On an average, the annual maintenance cost for a cow at the Gaushalas amounts to ₹60,000. This covers the full cost of food, shelter, supplies and medical treatment for 1 cow for a whole year. It also takes care of administrative expenses, such as, staff salaries, transportation of supplies, shelter & grazing land maintenance, etc.
