Story

Have you ever found instances and patterns violence, harassment, or discrimination in and around your home that have simply been normalised and accepted as part of your life? Have you ever tried to challenge this or speak about it publicly and heard a quick, ‘shh, ghar ki baat hai!’ (‘hush, it’s a household matter!’)?

Our families and homes are our first sites of socialisation and therefore also become the first places where we experience and witness social discrimination and oppression being reproduced and expressed. This discrimination is sticky and difficult to address since the people who uphold it are not an abstract, external or even an evil force - they are our friends, families, neighbours, club-members. Often, those who are eager to challenge and dismantle such instances may not have access to the skills and community support required in their journeys of being change-makers. We want to use our program as a way to not just build a socially just world but do it 'with' people to bring about incremental but impactful change in their own micro-communities.

Through our Ghar Ki Baat program, we aim to equip urban people with the skills and knowledge necessary to intervene in such situations and transform their immediate environments to be more socially just.

One Future Collective is on a mission to change the way we think about social change and justice. Through our program Ghar Ki Baat, we hope to build ‘power with’ communities. We believe that people hold the power to change the injustices that affect them through collective action, by building and channelling strong networks. The Ghar Ki Baat program is focused on facilitating community organisation by centring people’s collective experiences of injustice.

We do this through a free 8-hour training on understanding and practising social justice by building knowledge and skills on problem identification, community organising, navigating difficult conversations, fundraising, etc. This is then followed by community organising projects that participants are expected to undertake to apply their learnings in real time and report back on the progress made. These projects are targeted at the choice of micro-community of the participants themselves and geared towards realising behavioural and/or policy change. In the next year, we want to reach at least 2,500 individuals and build their capacities to influence their micro-communities to make them more socially just.

We understand the importance of running such a program and have therefore been running it free of cost to make it as accessible as possible. However, in order to ensure that we are able to do this sustainably, we need your support!

All you need to do is contribute a minimum of 250 INR to help us sustain and scale the impact of this program so that injustice is no longer ‘ghar ki baat.’ Your funds will help us run at least 3 cycles of this program in the upcoming year and we will be happy to report back to you on the successes and impact of this program!

We want to build the capacity of every Indian to be able to question, challenge, and intervene in situations of harm, violence, and discrimination and use their own potential towards creating a socially just world. This program has both knowledge and action oriented segments and is designed with the intention of providing the participants an opportunity to apply their learnings and witness transformational change in their own micro-communities.

Our pilot program, launched in February 2023, has reached a small, brilliant group of ~10 people across India, and has evidenced powerful community engagement and change in attitudes and behaviours both in the participants and their micro-communities. We have witnessed their transformational, deep impact and are eager to multiply it with your support.
