The prevalence of curable blindness in India is one of the highest in the world. Blindness can have a detrimental effect on an individual’s life and there is a strong association between blindness and poverty.

Sankara seeks to address this problem by providing high quality, equitable and affordable eye care to the rural poor in India. Founded in 1977 by Dr. R.V Ramani and Dr. Radha Ramani, Sankara has expanded into 10 Eye Hospitals located in 7 States. Since its inception, Sankara has performed over 2 million sight restoring surgeries and has become one of the major eye care providers in India.

 

Sankara has 10 Base Hospitals in Urban Areas and conduct regular eye camps in Rural Areas. Rural patients are screened and diagnosed at the Eye Camps and then transported to a base hospital if they require surgery. Services include routine checkups, Cataract removal and intraocular lens (IOL) clinics, Cornea and Refractive services, Vitreo-Retinal services, Glaucoma services, Lasik surgery, Pediatric Ophthalmology and Ocular Oncology.

ü Five-fold increase in free eye surgeries performed annually from 30,000 to 150,000.

ü Tripled vision screenings conducted annually in low-income rural areas from 120,000 to 370,000.

ü Quadrupled the number of screening camps in rural communities from 500 to over 2,000 annually.

ü Screened over 5.1 Million patients (As on OCT 2019)

ü Performed over 1.9 million FREE eye surgeries (As on OCT 2019)

ü Provided surgeries to more women (55%) as compared to men (44%).

ü 98% Vision Restoration Rate.
