Story

Government of India has expressed a strong commitment towards education for all. However, India still has one of the lowest female literacy rates in Asia. This low literacy rate not only has a negative impact on women’s lives but, also on their respective family along with country’s economic development. Several reports show that illiterate women have generally high level of maternal mortality, poor nutritional status, low earning potential and little autonomy within household. A women lack of education also has a negative impact on health and well-being of her children. Working in the villages of Vagra block, we have observed that some communities are marginal based on caste, class and gender. These communities are deprived of rights to equality. They live in the villages isolated from mainstream society. The worst affected are girl children and women as they are culturally oppressed by society. They live hand to mouth situation and have to feed large number of members in their family. Economic poverty does not enable children to attend school. Children are involved in child labour at a very young age to meet the ends of families. Primary and secondary schools are most often located in central village, which may be at a distance of several kilometers from satellite villages. The purpose of Girls Bicycle project is to allow girls to overcome the distance barrier to education as well as alternative transportation services which is not adequate in the villages.

The main purpose of the project is to provide transport facility to those girl children who have cleared 7th and 8th standard, and there are no higher classes within the village. We are working towards reducing the drop out rate amongst girl children, and supporting them for higher education in nearby villages which are just 3 to 5 km far.

Till now, 150 girls have received bicycle for pursuing higher education. Hence, 100% insurance to decrease girl child dropout rate. Dropout rate of girl child after 7th and 8th standard is 85% - 100 % and we are working hard towards reducing it to 0% in 10 villages. Women seems self-assured, confident and contented for their girl child education. Girl children who enrolled in higher education feels secure and safety during to and fro from house to nearby higher secondary school in village as they go in group. Increment in number of girls pursuing higher education has subsequently reduced the number of child marriages in the society.

Bicycle will Change My Future!

Dear donors, friends and supporters, thanks a ton for your valuable support to help this rural poor tribal families, GVT really appreciate your generosity.

Believe in yourself is the first secret to success!

As mentioned earlier GVT works in the rural tribal areas of Bharuch district in the state of Gujarat since 2001. We have seen many issues which force the families and especially the girls who don’t get or complete the higher education, higher education here means 5th or 8th standards. As in the villages there is schools up to 5th or 8th standards due to total numbers of the students and other Government rules and regulations. After completing 5th or 8th the students have to travel to the nearby villages and this is the most affecting reason for families not to study further of their children specially the girl child. Most of them take admission but do not go regularly to the schools become irregular or get dropped out.

GVT has seen many girls who have continued their studies after providing the bicycles, irregularity in the school and dropping out has reduced. Which has been remarkable change GVT has made till date. Though GVT has not able to achieve the target, there are many girls still not getting the education and remains home after the village level schooling.

I would like to share one of the best examples of a girl child. Reshma studying in 8th standard. She lives in a village called Gumanpura. In this village there is a school up to 5th standard, after that the students have to travel to the nearby village at least 5km. Most of the students get dropped out after completing 5th standard. The school teachers contacted GVT as many students are not getting the education after 5th standard.

Reshma got the bicycle in 6th standard, she is now in 8th standard, while interacting with her, she shared that she is very lucky that GVT has provided bicycle to her. She told that my career might end up if I did not receive the bicycle, bicycle will change my future.

Thanks again for your valuable support.
