That’s a wonderful idea! Ensuring our elderly loved ones have a peaceful and mosquito-free sleep is so important.
When a mosquito feeds on blood, it also swallows any viruses or parasites living in the blood. These viruses and parasites can be transferred to the next person the mosquito bites through its saliva. Any disease that is spread in this way from mosquito to human (or animal) is known as a 'mosquito-borne disease'.
While the mosquito may not be affected, these mosquito-borne diseases can cause immense suffering for humans. Roughly 390 million people are infected each year with dengue, and hundreds of thousands more are affected by Zika, chikungunya and yellow fever. (https://www.worldmosquitoprogram.org/en/learn/mosquito-borne-diseases)
India has a high burden of such diseases. Common types of mosquito-borne diseases in India include malaria, dengue, chikungunya, Japanese Encephalitis and Lymphatic filariasis.
Mosquito-borne diseases not only cause physical suffering and death, but also result in substantial economic losses due to health care expenses, loss of productivity, and decreased quality of life (Bhavsar et al. 2010). Mosquitoes cause more human suffering than any other organism: not only can mosquitoes carry diseases that afflict humans, they also transmit several diseases and parasites to which dogs and horses are very susceptible (CDC 2020a).
The burden of these illnesses falls heavier on the elderly people from poor rural communities, who tend to reside in areas with poor sanitation and limited healthcare facilities. Often confined to cramped quarters or verandas surrounded by livestock, they are particularly vulnerable. In the monsoon season, their living spaces become conducive for mosquitoes to thrive, increasing their susceptibility to mosquito-borne illnesses.
It's crucial to remember that any illness could pose a life-threatening risk to older individuals. By giving them a mosquito net, not only can they enjoy peaceful nights, but it can also potentially save their lives.
Today, let’s change lives of 1000 elderly people in Uttar Pradesh by gifting them safe and sound ZZZs. Support of One good mosquito net will cost INR 325.
