A Higher Primary School Veerenahalli has toilets built many years back. Because of the poor construction, the toilets are not in working condition and the teachers as well as students cannot use the washrooms.The plight of the girls is unimaginable.

The major problems are :

• Non-existent or insufficient water supply, sanitation and hand washing facilities.
• Toilets or latrines that are not adapted to the needs of children, in particular girls.
• Broken, dirty and unsafe water supply, sanitation and hand washing facilities.
• Children with poor hygiene and hand washing practices.
• There is no drinking water facility for the students.

Under these conditions, schools become unsafe places where diseases are transmitted. One of the major problems faced by school age children is infection of parasites and flukes. These and other diseases, often sanitation related, obviously, contribute to absenteeism, but there is a more hidden aspect: Poor health of children affects their ability to learn and therefore influences their perspective in life. Good health at school is essential for now and an investment for the future.

The project will construct 6-8 child-friendly toilets in the school. Children will have proper sanitation facilities just like any private school does. We will connect water from nearby water sources using water supply pipes. Children need not go in open area for washroom. Girls need not dread coming to school.

We will construct toilets and provide:

• Adequate amount of easy to maintain latrines (special units for boys, girl and teachers)
• Separate toilets for girls and boys
• Adequate amount of hand-wash facilities near the latrines and inside the schools.
• Facilities for drinking water

Providing hygiene and sanitation facilities in school will create an enabling school environment and children's regularity to school will be improved. Awareness of hygiene and sanitation will increase and children will have fewer instances of illness. Drop out rate, especially among girls will come down.
