Goat Rearing Project for Rural Poor Women

Pudukkottai is one of the most backward districts in Tamil Nadu State. The district is very often hit by drought. The people in the district are mainly depended on agriculture and animal husbandry activities. The main source of water for cultivation are irrigation tanks and wells. The agricultural operation is only for six months in a year. The people are idle during the remaining period of the year. Paddy, groundnut, millet and vegetables  are the main crops of cultivation in the project area.

There are 60 families at Arasanayagipuram village. It is a new settlement developed about 10 years back. All these families are homeless people settled from various villages by encroaching the government land. Now, the Government has given land document for this people. All the families are  engaged in coolie work. Mostly male members are engaged in stone cutting work. There are many poor and women headed families living in this village. Initially, 15 families will  be provided three goats each to generate income and their living standard through  this project

1. The proposed project will be implemented at Arasanayagipuram village for the benefit of 15 poor women headed families. The goat rearing is good income generating activity in the project area. Each woman will be given three goats, two female and one male goats. The cost of each goat is Rs,5500/-. The total cost of each goat unit is Rs.16500/-. All the goats will be insured to avoid any loss due to death.

2.  The goat recipients of 15 poor women headed families will rear the goats and generate income. Two female goats will produce 2 to 4 kids every year. The beneficiaries will sell the male kids and keep the females for rearing. The income generated from this activity will be used to meet their family expenses and also to meet the educational expenses of their children.

The poor women will rear goats and meet their livelihood needs.

They will meet the family expenses without any difficulty.

They will meet the educational needs of their children.

In general, the women will be empowered socially and economically through this project.
