Story

India has become the most populated country; however, the education levels are still way beyond the standard. There are school buildings but no teachers, in some places there are teachers but no infrastructure, in others, there are teachers and infrastructure but children can't afford to spend time on education as they are engaged in work for the survival of their families.

Over the last decade, learning outcomes for children in India have declined steadily. While children are graduating to a higher class every year, very few are performing at their expected levels. Even the dropout rates have increased in the past few years.

The school we are working on has students coming from very lower income groups with 60% of them from either single parents, maids, rickshaw drivers, etc.

We at Svadhinam believe that more than education for all, quality education for all stands more important. With the increased population, it is very important that education be an important part of sustainable development agendas. We will be working on the following in this school:

a) Stationary and Uniforms for students (targeting vulnerable groups).

b) Proper Infrastructure which includes solar panels, good toilets, labs, classrooms and libraries.

c) Creating knowledge banks for students in terms of new technologies and sustainable development.

d) Exposing students to vocational and institutional courses.

e) Developing sports infrastructure and bringing relevant exposure to the kids based on their interests.

We wish to bring overall development in a child's life through education and sports. The infrastructure development of schools will also help them access good labs, libraries, and classrooms, thus an overall mental development. Improving toilets in schools will help reduce dropouts, especially for girls after they reach puberty.

Solar panel installation in schools will not only reduce carbon generation but also provide extra income to the school in terms of lower electricity bills which can be used for various activities related to child development.

Moreover, focusing on sports will bring physical fitness as an important element in children's life thus not only providing them an added option for a career but also leading a healthier life. We will also provide vocational training to the students for age above 15 yrs which will lead to more entrepreneurship mindset in them. This will also help them to understand the skill they are good at and can have a career in it at a later stage.
