Climate change is causing severe and lasting damage globally, manifesting in extreme weather, ice loss, and coral bleaching, with global temperatures from 2014-2023 being the highest on record at about 1.2°C above pre-industrial levels. In Himachal Pradesh, despite mid-2023's heavy rains, floods, and landslides, tourist arrivals increased from 1.51 crore in 2022 to 1.60 crore in 2023, with over one crore visitors by June. While this tourism boost aids the economy, it also exacerbates pollution and non-biodegradable waste issues, especially in remote areas like Malana.
Malana: A Unique and Fragile Destination
Malana, nestled in the pristine Parvati Valley of Himachal Pradesh, is one of the most enchanting destinations. Known for its unique customs, centuries-old traditions, and breathtaking natural beauty, Malana is believed to be one of the oldest democracies in the world. However, increasing tourism has brought negative changes. Lacking proper waste management and disposal methods, most waste ends up in landfills, is burned openly, or is dumped in water bodies. This contaminates natural resources and leads to dangerous diseases, threatening the ecological balance of this unique region.
Healing Himalayas Initiative
Founded in 2016, Healing Himalayas has dedicated over eight years to preserving the Himalayan environment and promoting a circular economy. Starting with garbage collection and segregation in remote areas, we have expanded to building Material Recovery Facilities (MRFs) and currently have six operational MRFs in remote regions of Himachal Pradesh. Our efforts aim to manage waste effectively and maintain the region's natural beauty through planned campaigns and continuous projects.
Our Project in Malana
We are launching a new project in Malana to implement proper waste management and disposal techniques, preserving its natural beauty. Our goal is to build a Solid Waste Management Plant in Malana village to enhance waste management in this remote, tourist-centric area. By improving waste collection, segregation, and recycling, we aim to educate and engage both tourists and local communities. This project seeks to create a sustainable ecosystem that protects the environment and supports local livelihoods.
