Story

In our county, animal shelters across the country remain to be in dire need of funding. While the number of community animals in need of critical care is only doubling at a rapid rate, the ability of an animal shelter to execute a rescue operation and extensive critical treatment remains limited.

Each day, animals, primarily stray, either end up losing their lives owing to human cruelty or becoming victims of road negligence. While it may seem trivial to many, it is a situation of crisis in ground reality. Animal shelters are a reflection of the community and it is important to shed light on the fact that our community animals are as deserving of a respectful healthy life as their co-existing organisms, humans.

Unfortunately, in reality, several community animals in many areas, remain unvaccinated, unwell, and neglected. While they are in severe need of basic medical treatment, it remains inaccessible to them owing to inadequate resources. Several locations across the country, lack access to spay and neuter services, resulting in an overabundance of puppies and kittens. While shelter pets are in distress, the shelter staff continues to struggle when it comes to making difficult decisions owing to a lack of space and operational services. Without adequate resources and spacious shelter space, the situation of community animals in our country will only continue to deteriorate.

With the issue mentioned above, we, Kannan Animal Welfare pledge to build a home for the dogs that are already with us for years along with other rescues for the future. The shelter that we are planning to build on the two-acre land will only be allocated to the healthy and recovered furries while the medical section of the shelter will be located and operational in the present shelter, i.e., in Noida.

While our donors might have a question about our need for two different shelters at two different locations, we would like to clarify it primarily. In a country like India, where lakhs of community animals continue to become victims of human cruelty and road accidents, there continues to be a never-ending need for veterinary attention.

There also remains to be a dire shortage of shelter spaces for rescued animals in the country. However, we aim to do our bit by creating a comparatively larger and more organised space for such critical rescues so that we can take in more cases and save lives in the longer run. While at times, it gets difficult to manage the medical treatment of the dogs and other aligning tasks with the healthy ones, we also envision a smooth and hygienic process of delivering our services.

As a rescue and medical care unit that primarily focuses on helping animals in the community, gain access to quality health care as much as we humans, we consider being in a position to carry out daily rescue operations as our primary motive. However, we cannot possibly achieve this goal until we are well-equipped to look after a larger number of critical cases, whilst protecting the well-being of our existing rescues.

Currently, we have been struggling with an inability to take in a greater number of cases owing to our lack of space and resources as we find our existing shelter packed with over 120 canine rescues and 2 male cows who were found abandoned. While the need for rescuing has only been rapidly growing, our ability to protect more lives is only declining in our existing situation.

However, through our project of building a bigger shelter, the tables will seemingly turn in the favour of several hundreds of community animals in need. For, this will not only impact the lives of our permanently residing rescued animals, by providing them with a spacious and improvised standard of living in a shelter but would rather also help us to be in a position to rescue and protect a larger number of community animals who find themselves in need of immediate medical attention.
