Nutrition is the biggest challenge in India, spread across all age groups and genders. In India, of all children under 5 years, and adolescents, 38.4% are stunted, 21% of them are wasted, 35.7% underweight, and 58.4% anaemic. Even in adults between the age groups of 15 to 49 years, 53% of women and 22.7% of men are anaemic, and 22.9% women and 20.2% men have a BMI lower than normal. Across vulnerable sections of the society, such as the poor, orphan, tribal, nomadic tribes, the situation is far more grave. Nomadic tribes are always on the move, making it difficult to have reliable data on them. Because of the unavailability of assured data, they don't get covered under the government or NGO programs in childhood and then suffer lifelong. Deficiency of vitamins, minerals, and micro-nutrients hampers the development, performance, and productivity of children and women during the reproductive period.
Y4D Foundation is keen to change the situation of malnourishment in India, Generally, families put children for primary education in hostels so that their education does not suffer. Y4D ties up with such hostels or schools which cater to the vulnerable sections like the poor, orphan, tribal, nomadic tribes between age group 6 to 14. Y4D nutrition experts and medical team will create a complete health and nutrition profile of each child with the focus of tracking nutrient deficiency in children. Y4D Team will provide an affordable MNP (WHO Micro Nutrient Formula) to all the targeted beneficiaries for 120 days under Y4D's supervision. Team Y4D will track the attendance and issues of children on daily basis faced by targeted beneficiaries and their progress. Y4D nutrition expert alters diet plan of hostels/schools without impacting the food budget of the organization. After 120 days of intervention, Y4D medical team once again creates complete health and nutrition profiles of each child to decide if some of the children need further intervention. During the project duration, the Y4D team also conducts awareness sessions for the management, teacher, parents, and children about nutrition and other healthy practices along with smart eating and food habits.
After 120 days of intervention, most of the children will be pulled out of malnourishment and anaemic situations. Secondly, by the end of the project, 80% of the beneficiaries' health situation will be improved. It will lead to better learning capacity and productivity among children.
