The level of malnutrition among tribal children in brick kilns is severe. The parents, earning meager wages, struggle to provide two proper meals for their families. Consequently, many are compelled to send their children to work for as little as ₹20 per day.

A life of unimaginable suffering

“Children as young as 2 years old who have developed severe deformities in their limbs, are just skin and bones. Without our meal programme, these children will be left in a lurch and it will affect their mental state severely,” says Stella while talking about the gravity of the situation. 

According to her, the problem of child labour is also rampant around brick kilns. “Little kids are made to work from early morning for as little as ₹20 a day” she says.

The way forward

The NGO has been able to take its meal programme to over 3,000 thousand children over the last 15 years and is presently serving over 1,000 children each day. “The joy that we see on the faces of children on receiving hot nutritious meals is unparalleled,” Stella shares.

According to her, “Over the years we have seen a drastic improvement in the health of children owing to our meal program. The children’s learning ability has also improved significantly. We also provide education to these children so that they can be enrolled into mainstream schools. But none of this is possible without the support of donors.
