Story

Stray animals face unimaginable hardships while fighting to survive on the streets, where they endure a life of acute deprivation. The most heartbreaking part of their journey is the way they often meet their end – lonely, helpless, and in excruciating pain. While some suffer grave injuries from road accidents, others live on the brink of starvation and illness. Unfortunately, their plight is often ignored simply because they are strays. But People for Animals Uttarakhand and a few other NGOs helped by India Animal Fund (IAF) have taken a stand against the abuse, mistreatment, and suffering of voiceless strays.

Sadly these NGOs are dependent on public support and cannot bear the escalating cost of critical medicines and care required to save sick and injured animals alone. You can support to these NGOs to continue rescuing these innocent souls from illness, injury, and starvation. Donate now.

Life of strays

Stray animals are not just victims of road accidents, hunger, and sickness. They also endure unimaginable cruelty at the hands of humans. “People pour acid on stray dogs and cats. They are beaten with sticks and stones, have their legs broken, and much worse. Some cats and stray animals develop serious illnesses and there are some who are even forced to survive with blindness. Injured and ill animals often receive no care or attention from people around them,” says Priyanka Bangari, Managing Director, People For Animals Uttarakhand (PFAU).

PFAU and other NGOs have stepped up to provide lifesaving trauma care and medical intervention for these helpless animals. “There are many animals who cannot be sent for adoption owing to their medical condition. We need to provide these animals lifelong care at our facility,” the NGO leader adds. According to her, “rescue helpline operates round the clock, receiving numerous distress calls daily. Our dedicated team swiftly brings the rescued animals to our care facility, where the sick and injured are admitted, cared for, and nursed back to health. Those animals who can no longer survive on their own due to severe injuries find solace in our shelter home, which is currently home to over 80 stray cats”.

Growing challenge to care for helpless strays

“The number of animals we save and shelter continues to rise. Without the support we desperately need, these animals too will be left without anyone to care for them. We require a significant amount of funds for critical care medicines, essential animal care items, and the necessary food to rehabilitate the sick and injured. Help us save their lives because, without your support, we cannot help them,” Priyanka further adds.

The funds will also be utilised by the NGOs for:

a) Establishing animal helplines for the public to report distressed animals via calls and texts

b) Providing compassion-based education to 8-12-year-olds in schools, fostering long-term societal empathy towards animals

c) Activating chapters of the Society for Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (SPCA) in various districts, collaborating with government authorities to improve animal welfare

We are in urgent need of your help to prevent these innocent creatures from meeting a painful end on the streets. Please, donate now and be a part of our mission to save lives,” appeals Priyanka.

Dear Donors,

Thank you so much for your invaluable support. As of June 2024, we have successfully sterilized 358 stray cats in the Mumbai region through our dedicated partner organizations and volunteers. On completion of the post-care, the cats’ incisions and healing are evaluated before release. A follow-up is conducted with the feeder or volunteer about the cat, and in cases of any health challenges, they are referred back to the center for a general check-up.

However, our work is far from over. Every day, countless stray animals face immense suffering and dire conditions on the streets. With your continued support, we can provide these animals with the urgent treatment, care, and shelter they desperately need.

Donate now and join us in creating a community where every animal is treated with the love and respect they deserve!
