Life is tough for stray animals, especially dogs. They struggle to survive on the streets, facing hunger, injuries, and even death. Many are ignored, but Kasturi from People for Animals Society Raipur (PFA Raipur), decided to help. Kasturi started an animal shelter and hospital in 2015. Since then, her organisation has saved countless strays by giving them medical care and a safe place to recover. Kasturi has cared for over 10,000 animals in the last nine years, and her job is not done.

Life of strays

Stray animals are not just victims of road accidents, hunger, and sickness. They also endure unimaginable cruelty at the hands of humans. People throw acid on dogs; they throw them down from buildings; they pack pups in polythene bags and throw them in the river; (Some people) don’t allow dogs, even a single one to rest in front of their homes and they throw hot water on them, or they torture animals in such a way that their backs are broken or their heads are badly injured,” says Kasturi, founder of PFA Raipur Unit 2.

PFA Raipur provides lifesaving trauma care and medical intervention for these helpless animals.

“Since 2015, we have rescued over 10,000 animals, we have provided them with urgent treatment and done birth control surgeries. At present we have around 250 animals in our shelter who are being treated. At the same time, we are rescuing around 100 animals at the same time, We treat around 250 animals in a month,” she says.
