They are still being kept indoors,” says Aditya KV, founder of Umoya. This is not just a tragedy but it’s a violation of rights. Aditya believed that that play is not a privilege. It’s a right. “Play is the first form of learning for children, but unfortunately, it is the first form of exclusion with disabilities,” he says. Play is inclusion

“How many of us have actually seen children with disabilities on the playground, playing alongside other children?” asks Aditya. “More often than not, they are bullied and excluded.” Playgrounds remain segregated, and children with disabilities are often denied their childhood. Umoya exists to change that—using play and sports as powerful tools to build confidence, friendships, and inclusion. When children play together, barriers begin to break.

Innovation for every ability

“At Umoya, we constantly innovate, invent, and adapt different sports to suit different disabilities,” says Aditya. From football games adapted for children with cerebral palsy to sensory play for children on the autism spectrum, Umoya meets each child where they are. Already, the organization has reached close to 75,000 children across India—creating inclusive programs that build cognitive, emotional, and physical skills.

A future shaped through play

“When children with disabilities are denied opportunities to play, they miss out on critical skill-building. This can lead to a lack of academic knowledge, cognitive and social skills, and later in life, unemployment,” Aditya explains. Through regular play and interaction, children at Umoya learn to collaborate, communicate, and thrive—skills that prepare them not just for school, but for life.

Kids trained by Umoya have made the NGO and themselves proud by winning more than 85 medals in various para and special sports tournaments at national, state, and district levels.

One of the sporting events at international level that Umoya is training its disabled athletes is ‘Wheelchair Ultimate.’ The team will represent India at the World Wheelchair Ultimate Championship in September. Umoya also hopes it will become a nationwide movement.
