Little hands dig through trash in search of treasure
Girl children. Unwanted children. Disabled children. All form the 29.6 million orphaned children in India. Abandoned by poor parents, single mothers or families influenced by social stigma, these homeless children invariably end up roaming the streets to make a living. At an age when they should be playing amidst piles of toys, these tiny hands desperately rummage through garbage dumps in search of food to fill their hungry tummies, clothes to keep them warm, and whatever else they are lucky to find.
Surman Sansthan, a Jaipur-based child rights NGO, has been rescuing abandoned and orphaned children from a life of scavenging and homelessness for over 20 years. The organisation provides these deprived children with shelter, food, medical aid, education and skill development. “The inspiration behind our work at Surman Sansthan is to ensure that these neglected children have nutritious food to eat, to replace the garbage bags they carry with school bags on their backs, and to hear their laughter from miles away," shares Manan Chaturvedi, Founder, Surman Sansthan, who sold whatever belongings she had to build a shelter for orphans and abandoned children.
More than a hundred children, disowned and forgotten by their own, now have a second chance at the joys of childhood and the warmth of a loving family, under a safe roof. But Surman Sansthan is in urgent need of funds to continue rescuing and taking care of these children, providing them with hot meals, round-the-clock care, health check-ups, education and training. And with your help they can overcome this crisis.
Giving abandoned children the means to reclaim their childhood
At Surman Palna, the shelter home run by Surman Sansthan, 100+ abandoned and homeless children rediscover family life while they are cared for and given a firm foundation to build a successful future. They receive holistic nourishment, quality education, medical care and skill training - all within the safe precincts of this loving home. “We never wanted to build an orphanage. We wanted to make a house for children. Surman Palna is their own loving home - a safe space where we nurture them, nourish them and gift back their lost childhood,” explains Manan.
Help replace garbage bags with school bags for abandoned children
“I alone have only two hands. But if all our hands join together, we can certainly do a lot to help these children. I alone cannot do enough. With your united support, we can be the strength these children need to pursue their dreams,” appeals Manan.
Streets, railway station yards, bus depots, public toilets, garbage dumps and the like are no place for children to eat, sleep and live. Abandoned, orphaned and forgotten by their own families, let us not abandon them again. They deserve better. Surman Sansthan needs urgent funds to continue to provide food, shelter and education for these children. Your generous contribution will help them rescue children from a life on the streets, give them a safe home, and place them on the path to achieve their dreams. Donate now.
