Story

“More than 90% of the pregnant women suffer from anaemia here. When that is the case, the children will not have enough blood and suffer from malnutrition. In fact, during birth, many children die because the mother is simply incapable of normal delivery,” says a volunteer of Sukarya, driving home some hard facts on the situation in Mewat in Haryana, one of the most backward districts of the country.

Sukarya, a non-governmental organisation working in Mewat and other parts of north India, is trying to change the situation for the expecting mothers of the district and bring down deaths during childbirth and malnutrition in general in the region. And Sukarya is seeking our support through this fundraiser on Give so that the NGO can save more women and children from malnutrition and death.

Mewat is known for its high poverty levels, illiteracy, and poor healthcare facilities. One of the major challenges the people of Mewat face is the high incidence of anaemia among women, which leads to various health complications during pregnancy and childbirth.

Why Sukarya needs this fundraiser

Sukarya focuses on improving the health and well-being of women and children by providing access to nutrition and quality healthcare and education. IAs per the National Family Health Survey 5 report published in 2021, an estimated 57% of women aged between 15 and 49 years in India were affected by anaemia. This is very high among children (5 -60 months) at 67%. Such high levels of anaemia are not good for either mental or physical health. These numbers are far higher in Mewat.

Sukarya wants to tackle this issue on a war footing and it needs urgent support from the donors so that it can reach out to more and more people in the region. You will be donating to not just the women and children of Mewat, but for the future of a healthy India.

Woman on a mission

Meera Satpathy, the head of Sukarya, has been working for the welfare of women and children for over two decades now. Her deep concern for the well-being of women and girls led her to leave her successful business and devote herself to uplifting underprivileged rural women and girls. Despite the obstacles of patriarchal rural societies, Meera tirelessly worked to create a fairer environment in villages and slums of Haryana, Delhi, and Rajasthan. Through Sukarya, she has empowered women to become independent and significantly contributed to maternal and newborn nutrition, bringing about development and economic prosperity for entire communities.

One of the key initiatives of Sukarya is its community-based approach to healthcare. The organisation has set up health camps in remote villages and works with local healthcare providers to deliver healthcare services to the community. Sukarya's efforts have resulted in a significant improvement in the health and well-being of women and children in the Mewat region. But a lot more needs to be done for maternal and child health and nutrition. “We have provided services for 6 million women and children. We take a team of doctors, and they refer anaemic women to blood tests after looking at them. Then we give them medicines. Regarding food, counsellors decide what food they will have and how they will have it. It is an urgent need. Anaemia and malnutrition are a threat to our mothers and girls. So, I appeal to all of you that you support us in this fight,” says Meera Satpathy.

In the heart of Wazirabad, where the shadow of anaemia looms large over the lives of countless mothers and their unborn children, there lies a beacon of hope—Sukarya.

Meet Sayeba, a 24-year-old mother from Wazirabad, whose journey with Sukarya has become a symbol of the change that is possible when determination meets support. When Sayeba first came into Sukarya's fold, her health was a significant concern. With a hemoglobin level of only 7.9 g/dl, her situation was precarious, especially as she was pregnant and the stakes were higher than ever. However, Sukarya, with its holistic approach to healthcare, was ready to stand by her side.

Through the dedicated efforts of Community Health Workers (CHWs) and a team of healthcare professionals, Sayeba received the medical attention, nutritional guidance, and emotional support she needed.

Over time, her health began to improve dramatically. Her hemoglobin levels rose to a healthy 10.9 g/dl, a testament to the effective intervention strategies deployed by Sukarya. This was not just a victory for Sayeba but a beacon of hope for many women in Mewat facing similar challenges.

The climax of Sayeba's journey was the birth of a healthy baby girl at a Government Hospital, a moment of joy and relief for her family. This success story is a poignant reminder of the critical work Sukarya does in the region. It showcases the transformative impact that targeted healthcare services can have on maternal and newborn health, even in the most challenging environments.

This tale of hope and healing serves as a rallying cry for all of us to support Sukarya’s mission. By contributing to this cause, we are not only aiding in the fight against malnutrition and anaemia but also empowering women like Sayeba to lead healthier, more fulfilling lives.

Sukarya has made enormous strides towards ensuring a future in which no mother in Mewat has to suffer through anaemia at all, let alone give birth in those conditions.

Our selfless donor's contributions have allowed us to run health camps, provide medicines for our beneficiaries, raise awareness about this debilitating condition, and even provide meal packets for Gurugram's vulnerable women and children.
