Story
The joy of an elderly seeing their granddaughter’s face for the first time or being able to see sunlight after years of visual impairment is invaluable. Our NGO partner, Nanritam, has given such priceless moments of joy and the gift of sight to thousands of underprivileged seniors who could not afford surgeries. Working in remote villages where it is common for young sons to leave behind their elderly parents in search of livelihood, Nanritam has been a saviour for the visually impaired elderly.
Nanritam is in urgent need of funds to be able to provide eye treatment and cataract surgeries to underprivileged elderly in the backward district of Purulia, West Bengal. Donate now to provide life-changing surgeries.

Giving the elderly gift of sight
“The extent of illiteracy and poverty in the villages of Purulia is shocking. These villages are so remote that not even one eye-care institution has ever reached here. Blindness leaves the elderly so helpless that they are even unable to care for themselves and lead normal lives”, says Ranjana Sengupta, Secretary, Nanritam who has been at the forefront of the NGO’s operations. Nanritam is an organisation of several eye doctors who treat patients for free in far-flung areas.
Due to limited livelihood opportunities in backward areas, able-bodied persons often migrate to urban areas for better prospects, leaving their elderly parents behind to fend for themselves. Compounding this situation, many seniors grapple with visual impairment caused by cataract, leading to partial or complete blindness. Ranjana emphasises, "The elderly may not be aware that a quick 5-minute cataract surgery has the power to transform their entire lives."

The GIVE team visited Purulia to observe the Nanritam team hard at work trying to bridge the unjust gap that wealth disparity makes in society. Nanritam does this by providing cataract surgery at no cost to those who cannot afford it and by running a school that provides quality education to underprivileged children.
During our visit to Lokeswarananda Eye Hospital, we witnessed firsthand the impact created through the funds by the fundraiser. The hospital provides all services free of charge to individuals from underserved communities. We had the opportunity to interact with Ms. Ranjana Sengupta, Secretary of the organization, and Sri. Sarada Prasad Namhata, Joint Secretary. They briefed us on the organization's mission and the various programs they offer to help bridge the gaps in the society.
Nanritam uses dedicated money management software and employs multiple teams to track the cash flow. We also interacted with a few beneficiaries from the villages of Amlatora and Gehor, who had cataract surgeries performed through Nanritam.
Overall it was an extraordinary experience. Nanritam emphasis on quantity over quality helps them keep their focus and take heart in what they do. Using technology to improve people's health sets this noble organization apart.
