Prasad and his wife Anu once had a daughter, little Prarthana , who passed away when she was still a toddler. Heartbroken but determined to honour her memory, they decided to dedicate their lives to those who had no one.  

What began as adopting eight distressed children has now grown into a loving community that survives solely because Prasad refuses to give up.

“My father, a farmer, ended his life owing to debt and distress. What I have faced as a child, I don't want any other child to face the same, and that is the biggest motivation. At present, we have 45 children and 25 abandoned elderly in our shelter home. We are their family. Anu (my wife) loves them like her own, and I provide for them and protect them like any father would,” says Prasad who stands as the last hope for these young ones and the elderly.

When pain became a mission

Prasad knows what it means to grow up with hunger, fear, and the constant uncertainty of survival. He remembers the nights his family slept without food, the days his mother struggled alone after his father’s suicide, and the years he worked as a child doing menial jobs just to stay afloat. Today, those memories shape every decision he makes as the founder of Prathana Foundation, a home where abandoned elderly parents and orphaned children live together, as one family.

“Our home is very unique. Here, orphans and elderly parents who have been abandoned by their children live together as a family. Here grandparents get the love of grandchildren, and orphaned kids are cared for by the elderly,” he shares with quiet pride.  

In this one home, 45 children and 25 abandoned elderly have found love, belonging, and dignity, things life once denied them.

But behind this warmth is a daily struggle that Prasad carries alone.  

The daily struggle for survival

“It’s very difficult for me to earn enough to sustain such a big home as an auto rickshaw driver. I am constantly in fear that if I run out of money, what will happen to the elderly and the orphans,” he says. The rising number of children and elderly people taking shelter here means more mouths to feed, more medicines to buy, more hospital visits, and more responsibilities on a man who already gives everything he has.

Even after both he and Anu lost their jobs, he took up auto-rickshaw driving so the home could run. But the expenses of running such a large shelter are overwhelming.  

Children need nutritious rations, school supplies, a safe environment, and emotional support. Elderly parents, many frail and chronically ill, need constant medical attention, medicines, and hospital visits. And the need keeps growing.
