In busy railway stations across the country, a silent crisis unfolds every day. Children, separated from their families, who land up in stations alone, face unimaginable dangers – abuse, starvation, and the looming threat of exploitation. The lives of thousands of children could have taken a tragic turn, but for the tireless efforts of our NGO partner Railway Children India (RCI) and their dedicated volunteers. Countless children from across 35 major railway stations have been rescued and brought to safety.

A race against time

“In a year, nearly 1 lakh children go missing and the moment these children arrive (at railway stations) they are under threat. If we don't reach out to them at the earliest, within 15 to 20 minutes, we will lose that child,“ says Lopamudra Mullick, Senior Manager, Railway Children India.  

Shockingly, a significant number of children who land at railway stations are never found or reunited with their families. They often fall prey to abusers, facing the grim realities of trafficking, exploitation, and lifelong abuse.

Railway Children India through 24-hour outreach teams vigilantly patrol railway stations, identifying at-risk children and swiftly providing them with safe shelter and care. From short-term accommodations to long-term support, they offer a lifeline to those who have nowhere else to turn. Psychosocial support, medical assistance, and counselling, are just some of the vital services provided to help these children recover from their trauma and find their way home.
