This is the heartbreaking reality for many children trapped in red-light areas, where they face dangers no child should endure. But our NGO partner Mahima India is on a mission to provide safety to these children and give them a chance to rebuild their lives.

The unspeakable suffering

Rajasree’s voice trembles as she recounts, “A child cried and told me, ‘Aunty, I was exploited 12 to 13 times a day.’ This was an 11-year-old girl. Imagine the pain that child might be in.” Many children are transported while intoxicated, hidden under train berths, or even crammed into boxes during police raids, with no care for their safety.

Young girls are lured in different ways and trafficked. “For instance, after a cyclone, traffickers set a trap to pick up children and send them to cities. Many biological parents, driven by desperation, sell their daughters,” she says. These children are then forced into a life of unimaginable hardship.

A safe childhood is every kid’s right

“It is imperative that we give a normal childhood back to a kid. If we are able to give a child that right, with whatever we can and with whatever we have, that is enough," says Rajasree. Mahima India works to bring these children to safety, offering them not just a shelter but a chance for a better future.

“Sometimes kids come to us in such a brutally exploited condition that we must provide emergency medical services just to stabilise them physically," says Rajasree. Mahima India is their only way to get to safety and care. The NGO provides medical care, and also emotional support and education these children desperately need to rebuild their lives.
