Help Rural Children Build Strong Foundations in Reading & Mathematics

Story

Help a Child Read, Learn and Learn with Confidence

Every child deserves the opportunity to read with confidence, understand what they read, and develop the basic numeracy skills needed for everyday learning. However, many children in rural and underserved communities continue to struggle with foundational literacy and numeracy.

Akanksha Charitable Trust (ACT) works with government and aided schools to support children who need additional help in developing these essential learning skills.

Through our Grantha Mitra Foundational Literacy and Numeracy (FLN) Programme, we work with children in Grades 4–7 who require additional support in reading, comprehension and numeracy.

Our Approach

Grantha Mitra follows a structured learning approach:

Assess → Identify Learning Gaps → Provide Targeted Support → Track Progress

Children are assessed at the beginning of the intervention to understand their learning levels. Based on the identified gaps, learning activities and support are provided. Midline and endline assessments help us measure progress and understand the effectiveness of the intervention.

What Does Grantha Mitra FLN Do?

The programme focuses on:

  • Foundational reading and comprehension
  • Basic numeracy skills
  • Identifying children who need additional learning support
  • Activity-based and child-friendly learning
  • Individual and small-group support
  • Learning materials and practice resources
  • Regular assessment of children's progress
  • Supporting teachers and schools in addressing learning gaps

Evidence of Impact

ACT's Grantha Mitra FLN programme uses baseline, midline and endline assessments to measure children's progress.

In one intervention covering 10 schools and 160 students, the proportion of students demonstrating the targeted literacy competencies increased from 25.58% at baseline to 65.28% at endline. Similarly, targeted numeracy competency increased from 21.28% to 65.52%.

These results demonstrate the potential of structured, targeted FLN support in helping children overcome learning gaps.
