Story of Ananya

Ananya's story is one of remarkable resilience and unwavering determination. We met Ananya during one of the eye check-up camps we organized last year in her village in Uttar Pradesh. She was born with no eyesight and couldn’t attend school or receive any informal education till the age of nine because of her blindness.

After joining the Arunodaya (Sunrise) for Blind program at Ek Kadam Aur, Ananya found a way to continue learning and growing. Once battling with blindness, Ananya goes to school with her sighted friends today and wants to be a yoga teacher when she grows up.

The Ek Kadam Aur is helping 203 children like Ananya from four states to be school-ready by providing them with one-on-one training in Braille, mobility, and life skills. Though education is everyone’s fundamental right, for these blind children, it comes with a cost. Your donation will help these children attend school and live with dignity. 

Due to a lack of funds, there are 843 blind children still waiting to be enrolled in the Arunodaya program.

The Issue:

Do you know there are more than 320,000 blind children in India, and the majority of them are from the remote and poorest parts of India? Due to the extreme poverty, many blind children are unable to attend school.

1. Children do not have access to rehabilitation programs.
2. Schools are not equipped to teach children with disabilities.
3. Lack of knowledge within the community and among parents about the issue.

Most children spend their entire childhood without education and being excluded from the society.
