Story

For 11-year-old Ravi (name changed) a normal day would start before the sun rose and involved carrying heavy loads up a narrow staircase, in a ramshackle building filled with clouds of toxic smoke. And work rarely ended before nine or ten at night. “The fumes in the stone-polishing factory were such that I would choke and feel suffocated all day long. There was a time when I fell from the first floor and had I not caught onto the railing, I am not sure what would have happened. I was saved by God's grace” recalls Ravi, who was rescued by Sahyog Care For You, an organisation that has been rescuing and rehabilitating children trapped in child labour and bonded labour for over 20 years.

Today, years after being saved from the confines of child labour, Ravi is still haunted by the abuse he faced, but fortunately, our NGO partner Sahyog Care for You has ensured that Ravi received the medical care and rehabilitation he needed.

Sadly there are still thousands of children trapped as bonded labourers who are being robbed of their childhood. Help Sahyog Care for You rescue such unfortunate children, provide them urgent medical care and rehabilitation, so they too can get back their childhood. Donate now.

A fight to save childhood of hundreds

“It is very common for us to go to a restaurant and hear the word chotu. But no one ever thinks about the fact that behind this universal name given to children working as labourers in hotels and tea stalls, are little kids who have been deprived of not just basic rights but even their own identity,” says Shekhar Mahajan while shedding light on the genesis of the child rights NGO. “I would be hurt and shaken to see people use the word chotu and to change this became my motivation. I wanted to give children an opportunity to live a good life away from abuse and exploitation.

Starting out with a strong resolve, Shekhar and his NGO have till date changed the lives of thousands of children and have freed them from a life of abuse as child labourers and bonded labourers.

The only thing stopping Shekhar from ensuring that every child gets the upbringing they deserve is a lack of resources and funds. With our support Sahyog Care for You can extend its reach and save thousands of children still trapped in bonded labour in hazardous conditions.

Giving children toys, not tools

The life of an innocent child employed as a labourer is nothing short of hell. According to Shekhar, “Children are made to work 12 to 15 hours a day on an empty stomach. 10 to 15 children are crammed into small rooms and are rarely ever given the opportunity to see the open sky. For six to seven years, children are unaware if it's day or night. They even forget the names of their own parents after a time.”

As the practice of child labour continues unabated across the country Sahyog Care for You has emerged as one of the leading organisations fighting against the exploitation and abuse of children.

With our support Shekhar and Sahyog Care For You can further intensify their fight against child labour and the exploitation of innocent children for profit. Help them bring back the joy of childhood to thousands more languishing in hazardous factories.

Our recent visit to Sahyog Care for You in New Delhi unveiled the profound impact of their Child Labour Rescue Operation Program, spotlighting the NGO's unwavering commitment to rescuing and rehabilitating child laborers.

Sahyog Care for You, since its inception in 2002, has been a beacon of hope, offering comprehensive support across education, health, and community development. With a focus on empowering slum dwellers and vulnerable communities, Sahyog has extended its support to nearly 1 lakh children, 4,000 youth, and 14,000 women. A significant part of their mission involves rescuing children from child labor, providing them not only immediate care but also a pathway to a dignified life.

The visit shed light on Sahyog's meticulous process for identifying and rescuing child laborers. Teams conduct reconnaissance in industrial areas for about six months, a testament to their dedication to ensuring the safety and liberation of children. Following careful planning and coordination with government departments, rescue operations are carried out always prioritizing the immediate and long-term needs of the children involved.

Post-rescue, children are taken to shelter homes where they receive counselling, care, and an opportunity to reintegrate into society through education or vocational training. The story of Moinuddin (name changed), a 16-year-old rescued from a slipper factory, highlights the transformative journey from bondage to education. Similar stories of young girls aspiring to start their boutiques after being rescued from factory work underscore the impact of Sahyog's rehabilitation efforts.
