“We rescued an elderly mother who has four grown-up sons. All four of her sons have big factories in Delhi and live in bungalows. But they refused to give shelter to their own mother despite having luxurious mansions. This is the reality of the world we live in today, where children have shunned the responsibility of caring for their elderly parents. What is the fault of these people”, says Shiv Prasad Sharma founder of Ram Lal Old Age Home, a safe haven for over 350 elderly rescued from city streets.

The only hope for helpless seniors

“Me and my father once saw an elderly father sitting on a railway platform and crying. We inquired and found out that he had been driven out of his own house by his three sons. We tried to console him and said that we could take him with us to our house. We went to buy a ticket for him, but by the time we got back he had jumped in front of a train and given up his life”, recalls Shiv Prasad. “This incident shocked us to such an extent that my father asked me to leave my government job in the NHPC and start a shelter home for abandoned elderly. I invested whatever I had and even ran through my family's savings to build Ram Lal Old Age Home,” he further adds. 

Since its inception, Ram Lal Old Age Home has been a saviour of neglected and abused senior citizens giving them the care and love they were denied by their own families.

Urgent need for support

Shiv Pradas says, “I have already spent everything I had to keep a roof above the heads of these seniors. At times, it brings tears to my eyes thinking about what will happen to this family of mine. It is a huge challenge to arrange for medication, food clothing for so many people. Our biggest challenge is that of funds. With each passing day more and more elderly keep coming to us and I don’t have the heart to send back an elderly mother.”
