The slum population in Karnataka mainly comprises of the migrant population who are settled in the city for more than 5-10 years. They feed large families and survive with earning even less than Rs 250 per day. With the given set of living conditions and abject poverty of these slum dwellers, providing them holistic and quality education is of paramount importance. The development of the child needs to be viewed in a more integrated fashion - hence the need for nutrition and healthcare are vital components that needs to be addressed. Education is the single largest opportunity for the impoverished children to break the cycle of poverty.

Christel House’s quality education program provides access to good health care, wholesome nutrition and a caring environment. We try to ensure that we admit the poorest of the poor - the average monthly income of the community admitted with us is below Rs. 7,500/- per month with an average of 5 members in the family. The Learning Centre provides children free, rigorous academic education, which stresses on competencies in English, Math, Science, Computer and basic skills. The students have access to two dedicated counsellors from Kindergarten to Grade 12. We help children achieve success by providing vocational training and mentor them until they are integrated into work and society.

Our model creates a “multiplier effect” as, once the cycle of poverty is broken, future generations benefit continuously. Our students overcome all odds to stay in school, graduate, continue their studies and gain employment. The commitment we have towards the students can be 20 years or more – from kindergarten till job placements. In this process, they gain the abilities and skills to contribute towards the society.
