Shailabata Bhakta is 96 years old. Her son’s death devastated her, and then she was starved and abused by her daughter-in-law who threw her out of the house. “I lost my family, which is the most important thing to me”, she shares. Shailabata Bhakta has been living at the Abhoy Mission Ashram for 15 years and has found a family in the other elderly and special-needs children of the home. Abhoy Mission Ashram is unique in many ways. It not only cares for 28 neglected elderly people, it also has 65 special-needs children in the same campus. The elderly feel at home with the children.
But the NGO needs your support to save their home, which is in a dilapidated condition and it could crumble any time. Donate now.

A second chance for the abandoned elderly and disabled children
Senior citizens living at the Abhoy Mission Ashram were abandoned by their families on the streets, forcing them to beg for scraps of food. They are helpless without support. While they have been deprived of life with their children and grandchildren, Abhoy Mission gives them an opportunity to at least be with the children.
The Abhoy Mission Ashram gives them a home, nutritious food, medical care and the opportunity to live their lives knowing that someone cares for them. The special-needs children also enjoy getting attention and affection from the elderly. Take the case of children like Rahul, who is hearing-impaired and mentally challenged. He receives nutritious food, counselling and medical care. After coming here he has started to speak on his own and interacts well with the other children. His life has been transformed. He also gets the care of the elderly, just like his grandparents used to do when they were around.
“We came up with this unique idea to fight the loneliness of the elderly. And the children get grandparents. They enjoy the company so much that they can’t live without each other after some time,” says Susmita De, Secretary of Abhoy Mission.
The Abhoy Mission Ashram is the only home for the abandoned elderly and disabled children. Their home is in a dilapidated condition and they need your help to rebuild it. Donate now.
Need for the fundraiser
Susmita De of Abhoy Mission shares that the home is a one-of-a-kind place where the rejected elderly and children find comfort in each other. “It is the only home that these disadvantaged elderly and children have, but it is in a dilapidated condition. The walls of the home are crumbling and each time it rains, water leaks from the roof and damages the structure of the home,” says Susmita, and it needs urgent repair. To continue caring for these neglected senior citizens and children, Abhoy Mission aims to complete the construction of their new home before the monsoon season to ensure that the residents can continue to have a safe, secure and loving home.

Basanti Deb, 78, from Durganagar, Tripura, faced immense emotional and health challenges after her husband's death. With her daughter struggling financially to support the family, Basanti was admitted to a psychiatric hospital in Agartala for treatment and care.
After her recovery, Basanti's daughter approached Abhoy Mission seeking a safe shelter for her mother. Since arriving at Abhoy Mission in 2017, Basanti’s life has gradually transformed. With regular medical care, counselling, yoga sessions, and physiotherapy support, she became calmer, healthier, and more emotionally stable.
Abhoy Mission's commitment extends beyond supporting the elderly.
In FY 2025-26, the fundraiser supported the renovations of Abhoy Mission's shelter home, benefiting 91 individuals, including children with special needs and destitute elderly persons. The improved infrastructure will enhance accessibility, safety, and comfort, enabling residents to move freely and access essential services with greater dignity and independence.
While significant progress has been made, some renovation work is still pending. Your continued support can help us complete the remaining improvements and create a fully accessible, safe, and dignified space for all residents. Donate now.
In Tripura, there lies a one-of-a-kind shelter home where the aged rest while watching the young play. Abhoy Mission has taken upon itself the immense challenge of caring for both the abandoned elderly and children with disabilities, but we need your help to continue doing so!
In the period April '25 - September '25, we have made renovations to our beloved shelter home, including wall plastering, ramp construction for easy movement of the elderly, tile fitting, construction of disabled-friendly washrooms, grills, door, and shutter fitting, railing work, and electrification. We aim to make our shelter home more accessible to our inmates, but we urgently require additional funds to do so.
The stories and lives of each of our 91 inmates at Abhoy Mission are as diverse as they are cherished. Your contributions go a long way toward ensuring our sustained intervention. Please help us continue to make these stories every passing day.
Ensure these children with disabilities continue to be able to play with their newfound nanas and nanis.
