Story

Shailabata Bhakta is 96 years old. Her son’s death devastated her, and then she was starved and abused by her daughter-in-law who threw her out of the house. “I lost my family, which is the most important thing to me”, she shares. Shailabata Bhakta has been living at the Abhoy Mission Ashram for 15 years and has found a family in the other elderly and special-needs children of the home. Abhoy Mission Ashram is unique in many ways. It not only cares for 28 neglected elderly people, it also has 65 special-needs children in the same campus. The elderly feel at home with the children.

But the NGO needs your support to save their home, which is in a dilapidated condition and it could crumble any time. Donate now.

A second chance for the abandoned elderly and disabled children

Senior citizens living at the Abhoy Mission Ashram were abandoned by their families on the streets, forcing them to beg for scraps of food. They are helpless without support. While they have been deprived of life with their children and grandchildren, Abhoy Mission gives them an opportunity to at least be with the children.

The Abhoy Mission Ashram gives them a home, nutritious food, medical care and the opportunity to live their lives knowing that someone cares for them. The special-needs children also enjoy getting attention and affection from the elderly. Take the case of children like Rahul, who is hearing-impaired and mentally challenged. He receives nutritious food, counselling and medical care. After coming here he has started to speak on his own and interacts well with the other children. His life has been transformed. He also gets the care of the elderly, just like his grandparents used to do when they were around.

“We came up with this unique idea to fight the loneliness of the elderly. And the children get grandparents. They enjoy the company so much that they can’t live without each other after some time,” says Susmita De, Secretary of Abhoy Mission.

The Abhoy Mission Ashram is the only home for the abandoned elderly and disabled children. Their home is in a dilapidated condition and they need your help to rebuild it. Donate now.

Need for the fundraiser

Susmita De of Abhoy Mission shares that the home is a one-of-a-kind place where the rejected elderly and children find comfort in each other. “It is the only home that these disadvantaged elderly and children have, but it is in a dilapidated condition. The walls of the home are crumbling and each time it rains, water leaks from the roof and damages the structure of the home,” says Susmita, and it needs urgent repair. To continue caring for these neglected senior citizens and children, Abhoy Mission aims to complete the construction of their new home before the monsoon season to ensure that the residents can continue to have a safe, secure and loving home.

Donate now to help Abhoy Mission construct a new home for the neglected elderly and children.

A profound thank you from the bottom of our hearts!

Our little home is a beacon of hope to the scores of helpless souls in our care. Our generous donors allow us to continue our mission by providing the funds necessary to manage, maintain, and expand our operations.

Apart from the food and supplies provided to our beneficiaries, we take pride in their living conditions. As such, we need your help to renovate our shelter and give these abandoned elderly a home where they can maximize their well-being. The work is well underway but we can't finish it without securing additional funds!

Work has already been completed on the third-floor roof and ramp roof. Completing the sidewalls would finish our project and dramatically boost our beneficiary's quality of life.

Donate now and change the world for the better.

Shailabala Bhakta's life story, beginning in 1928 in a poverty-stricken family, is a narrative of resilience and hope. After facing immense hardships, including the loss of her husband and the betrayal and abandonment by her family, Shailabala found refuge and a new beginning at Abhoy Mission Ashram in 2008. This sanctuary has offered her, alongside other elderly and special-needs children, not just medical care and a safe environment, but a family that stands in stark contrast to the isolation and neglect she previously endured.

Her journey, from enduring poverty and loss to finding solace and community in the ashram, highlights the transformative power of care and compassion. Despite her age and health challenges, Shailabala actively participates in ashram activities, embodying the spirit of resilience and joy that Abhoy Mission Ashram nurtures.

However, the ashram's ability to continue offering this sanctuary is in jeopardy due to the deteriorating condition of its facilities. With the monsoon season approaching, urgent repairs and reconstruction are needed to ensure a safe and secure home for Shailabala and the many others who depend on it.

This call to action is an opportunity for us to contribute to a cause that extends beyond mere charity; it's about preserving a haven that represents family, hope, and a second chance at life for many. Your support can help Abhoy Mission Ashram continue its vital work, ensuring that Shailabala and her extended family can look forward to their days filled with peace and joy.

Let's join hands to support this mission. A donation today means more than just bricks and mortar; it signifies the continuation of a legacy of compassion and communal care.
