Story

Aarohi is borne out of a review (and is in response) of the Indian public health situation, which pointed to serious blood shortages - further seriously aggravated by the lack of appropriate infrastructure for enabling ‘safe blood transfusions’ for patients requiring Transfusion throughout the year.

Children with Thalassemia require Blood transfusion every 15 to 20 days throughout their life.

Sourcing Blood especially for patients in the underprivileged section of our society is very difficult and sometimes impossible leading to the child suffering with Anemia and later succumbing to it.

Aarohi plays the role of a reliable intermediary who connects such needy with the large community of bighearted Voluntary Donors and ensures that these needy get access to safe blood / blood components.

The Delivery Model

ABB is a neutral and reliable intermediary facility not linked to specific corporate hospital or any affiliated group. It is committed to provide Blood Components free of charge to Thalassemic children and children with Leukemia.

In India every year 10000 new Thalassemia children are added every year. WHO predicts that 1 million people will have Thalassemia in the next 10 years.

In India, about 80 to 90 % of the babies born with this disorder die within a few years of birth. Untreated Thalassemia can even lead to death in the First Decade of Life! A child with Thalassemia needs a Blood Transfusion every 3 to 4 weeks throughout its life to survive. Regular Blood Transfusions are one of the key Supportive treatments required for survival of the child.

Aarohi Blood Bank Supports 200 to 250 transfusions to Thalassemic Children free of cost every month.

At least 30 % of the blood collected is given to leukemic children in MNJ Govt. Cancer Hospital free of cost every month.

Creating an Awareness of Thalassemia and importance of Voluntary Blood Donation is done regularly at camps and to all people who come with the requirement of Blood at the Blood Bank. By creating an awareness of Thalassemia, the susceptible groups are encouraged to get themselves tested for detecting the carrier state of this Genetic Disorder.

This will help prevent a child with Thalassemia Major being born.

WHO goal of making Blood Donation 100% Voluntary by 2020 is one of the Goals of Aarohi.
