Many nomadic communities till date do not realize the importance of education primarily due to their ancestors’ ignorance & superstitions. One such community in Maharashtra is the Potraj Tribe. For earning a living, they rely on receiving alms for portraying dangerous stunts. They spank themselves with heavy whips of leather at public places in hope of getting some money from the spectators. They even indulge their small kids in these activities to manage their survival.
SMEF’S team & volunteers have been working since 2009 among children of Potraj Tribe to ensure that they do not lead a nomadic life like their parents. Our Educational Program include counselling the parents to enroll children in school, teaching them English and computer literacy. With doorstep schooling method for developing extracurricular talents, we reach out to them by going door to door to identify those children who require our help the most.
Since 2009 our young professionals and student volunteers have benefited 500 children and their family. Parents’ awareness about the necessity of education is increasing and we are receiving massive enrollment requests. We aim to reach out to 2000 nomadic children in the next five years which is impossible without your support.
