Story

In Melghat, a remote and densely forested area of Maharashtra, conventional medical care was a foreign concept. Death and disease reigned supreme, with thousands of tribal villagers living at the mercy of faith healers and quacks. Young villagers were losing their lives to minor infections. Faced with these dire circumstances, Dr. Ashish and his wife, Dr. Kavita Satav, left behind their promising careers in medicine and relocated to Melghat. "Just one visit to Melghat convinced me that I cannot let these people die, I cannot let these families be destroyed. The extent of their suffering was unimaginable," says Dr. Ashish, who established Mahan Trust Hospital in a rundown hut in 1997.

Dr Ashish and Dr Kavita sacrificed everything for poor tribal villagers and have been single-handedly responsible for saving the lives of thousands. Today this doctor couple is in urgent need of funds to procure life-saving hospital equipment. Your support is crucial to their work. Donate now to save lives

The only hope for thousands

“The geography of this area is such that the nearest critical care facility is over 100 kilometres away. The tribal villagers can not even afford two proper meals, they can’t even dream about travelling this far and paying for costly treatment. Once the mother of a newborn baby told me that she would let her child die as opposed to traveling to get treatment. Because he would have to leave her other three healthy children behind with no one to provide for them. Under these circumstances, Mahan Trust is the only hope for lakhs of people. I can say this with some confidence that had our hospital not been there, countless people would have lost their lives to treatable diseases,” says the NGO founder.

The nonprofit needs your donation

Mahan Trust, starting from a small hut has now expanded to a larger building. But still, a lot of the essential medical equipment needed to treat critical patients is out of reach for Dr Ashish. However, your contribution can enable him to get the life-saving equipment and save many more lives. Donate now.

Donate to this fundraiser on Give.do, India’s largest and most trusted online donation platform, to help Dr Ashish Satav provide urgent critical care facilities to poor tribal villagers who can’t afford treatment.

Date of Visit: November 9, 2024

Visited by: Edin Jayanti

It takes hours to reach remote tribal areas in the interior of Madhya Pradesh. Quality medical care was a dream for those living in those areas. A dream only fulfilled with the arrival of Mahan Trust.

The visit began with a meeting with Dr Ashish, founder of Mahan Trust. We listened to the origins of his foundation; how he was inspired by values of human dignity and compassion for the less privileged and learned of his mission to make healthcare more accessible for those who couldn't afford it. His passion for social service is evident in the various healthcare initiatives undertaken by Mahan Trust.

Our visit then delved into the lives of the villagers. Beneficiaries of Mahan Trust told us of their issue with serious but treatable illnesses like Diabetes, TB, anemia etc, and how Dr. Ashish and his team provided crucial medical services at no cost to the community. Their gratitude for Mahan Trust's work was obvious and the program's effectiveness was made clear from the beneficiaries' stories. Furthermore, we learned that Mahan Trust even provides free medicines to the villagers, alleviating their financial burden further and drastically improving the quality of their life.

The trust stands as a beacon of hope for the tribal communities it serves, particularly in addressing their healthcare needs through accessible and free medical services. Witnessing the dedication of the staff and the profound impact on the beneficiaries reaffirmed the importance of such initiatives in bridging the healthcare gap for marginalized populations.

But Mahan Trust needs more help to achieve their goals. Contribute now and be a partner in the fight for more equitable healthcare infrastructure.
