Story

“During the peak of the COVID pandemic, the education of the children in our community suffered greatly. But the women in the community were helpless as we were engaged in chores like fetching water from a common tap, like 200 other families in the area. Not only are our homes filled with buckets of water restricting us from tutoring the kids, but the water is unclean too. If only there was a way to contact local authorities, our situation wouldn’t be this bad.” said Kamala (name changed) Budarpura area of Jamalpur Ahmedabad, an area that is not even visible on maps.

Accessibility of public goods and services like water, sanitation, road, streetlights, parks, health, education, police and disaster safety are often looked at from a gender-neutral lens. However, when communities struggle to avail quality public goods and services, women like Kamla, who have the primary responsibility of household chores and care work are most affected. Such issues are common across localities in Ahmedabad. But, more often than not they fail to be addressed or don't take account of its urgency from women's experiences. Women repeatedly find themselves in a position where they are unable to demand solutions as citizens and even as leaders when surrounded by patriarchal work culture.

The Solution? A program called Citytantra that aims at empowering community youth in a way that they not only strengthen effective local governance for women but also cultivate a gender lens for an equal future. This training and fellowship program brings aspiring youth leaders from 4 municipal wards (administrative unit comprising approx 100000 population) of Ahmedabad to empower women community leaders and bridge the gap between the women citizens and councilors. It will enable them to hold community meetings, conduct research and use media tools Radio to make women’s voices spearhead public discourses.

WHY DO WE NEED FUNDS?

For our year-long program so that we can reach out to 2000 marginalized women like Kamala by providing fellowship to 6 young community leaders.

Through the Citytantra program, we aim to do similar work. We plan to work on at least 6 issues from 3 wards of Ahmedabad- Jamalpur, Gomtipur, and Khadia in a year.

If you help one woman, you help thousands of women as she will bring societal change in her community once she is empowered.

Your contribution, even if small, can help us bring a big change.
