Help Us Fill the Shelves — Fund Books for Free Village Libraries

Across 8 villages in 5 districts of Uttar Pradesh, something extraordinary is happening. Children, farmers, homemakers, and first-generation learners are walking into free community libraries, spaces filled with curiosity, warmth, and the promise of a better tomorrow.

These are the libraries running under the Aruna Mithlesh Foundation with Bansa Community Library at its heart.

But today, we are at a turning point.

Our libraries are growing faster than our shelves can keep up. Membership has surged, but the number of books has not. Many children wait weeks to borrow their favourite titles. Students preparing for exams share limited study material. Readers hungry for new stories often find the shelves too still.

To continue nurturing this growing community of readers, we must bridge the gap between readers and resources.

The Challenge We Face

With our growing membership, the demand for books has skyrocketed. Ideally, a library should maintain a 1:10 member-to-book ratio, meaning each member should have access to ten books at one time. However, despite our efforts, our current collection stands at just 5,000 books, falling short of the needs of our curious readership.

We want our members to read books that challenge the status quo, foster critical thinking, and inspire action. Our members seek books on anti-caste, gender, revolutions, inclusivity, and justice—themes that help shape a more informed and conscious society. But without expanding our collection, we are unable to meet this demand.

Our Goal: ₹10,00,000 for Books

This fundraiser will help us:

• Add over 8,000 new books to our collection — storybooks, reference material, regional literature, and academic resources.
• Equip all 8 community libraries — including Bansa, Basdila, and others — with curated collections tailored to their members’ needs.
• Improve the member-to-book ratio, ensuring that every reader has access to diverse and age-appropriate titles.

Each contribution will directly go into building vibrant reading spaces across rural Uttar Pradesh spaces where books are not luxuries, but gateways to opportunity.

In villages where access to education remains a struggle, a book can change everything.

A single library book can:

• Help a child read fluently for the first time.
• Encourage a young woman to continue her studies.
• Spark new conversations among farmers about their rights, health, and community.
• Build a collective imagination that goes beyond barriers of caste, poverty, and geography.
