Breakthrough is a 24-year-old organization working primarily with adolescents and young adults in schools and communities, to make gender-based violence unacceptable by changing the culture that permits it. Breakthrough's work with nearly 1.5 million adolescents in schools and communities reshapes gender norms and beliefs before they become a part of their behaviour. Our 360 degree campaigns and media work reaches millions across the country to change behaviours and attitudes, and to provide people with a sense of personal accountability in prevention of violence and discrimination against women and girls.

At the core of our engagement is a 2-year, school-based gender equality programme for grades 6 to 8, called Taaron ki Toli (Legion of Stars) or TkT. This gender equality curriculum has brought significant shifts in gender behaviours of boys and girls.

Breakthrough's Impact:

• An increase in girls’ age at marriage by nearly 2 years (1 year 11 months) in Uttar Pradesh

• Transformed 15.5% of gender regressive views of adolescents in Haryana

• 6% decrease in the number of adolescent school dropouts during the Covid

pandemic

• Likelihood of girls being enrolled in school increased by 89% in Bihar

• 17.6% increase in intergenerational dialogue between girls and parents in Uttar Pradesh
