Since 2000, the Velugu Old Age Home has provided more than just shelter. It offers a loving family, dignity, and compassionate care to its residents who have nowhere else to turn.

“It is heartbreaking to see mothers getting abandoned by their own sons after either the mother has transferred her property’s share or when she doesn’t have anything to offer to her child in the form of gold or pension money,” says Uday Mohan Reddy, Secretary, Velugu Old Age Home.

Over the years, Velugu has helped scores of elderly women find a safe haven to spend their final years. Away from the pain and abuse they may have gone through before coming here. Many women were found on the streets, sometimes begging.

“Many of these elderly women lived their lives in middle class families and had decent lifestyles. After their husbands died or when they became very old, their children started treating them as a burden and started to abuse them. They were left with no other choice but to leave their homes. Some were pushed out,”: says Bhagya Lakshmi, Convenor, Velugu.

However, this noble mission lies a pressing challenge: resources are stretched thin. Despite the dedication of its caretakers and staff, Velugu is unable to extend support to all the elderly in need due to financial constraints. Rising costs of essential supplies, medicines, and utilities have further intensified the struggle. It is here that the power of collective generosity can make a transformative difference.
