A well-known tourist destination, the Araku Valley is known for its scenic landscape, towering deodar trees and coffee plantations. But behind this picturesque landscape there exists an ugly reality, the trafficking of tribal women and girls.

Countless girls are abducted and forced into prostitution by traffickers from this area each year. K Venkata Rao and his NGO Tribal Educational Rural Development Society have been relentlessly trying to end the abduction and abuse of girls and provide them with the care they deserve.

The unseen plight of tribal girl children

“In the areas where Scheduled Tribes stay, there is no security for girls and young women. They fall victim to various types of crimes. They are tricked into doing unsavoury things by promising them money,” explains the NGO founder.

Poverty remains rampant across the area leaving countless young girls without education and an opportunity to have a future.

The only hope for countless girls 

We wanted to ensure that girls who are orphans don’t fall prey to traffickers and hence we started this home so that we can take care of them. They are happy as we provide the orphaned girls with nutritious food and facilities like shelter and education. But if we cannot get support from donors, we will not be able to do much and the girls who are under our care will again end up on the streets. These girls understand the importance of good education and we are facilitating just that. Here, all the girls are brought up as though they have a set of parents. That’s our goal. To continue to provide these orphaned children with nutritious food and a good education, I have only one appeal.
