Story

“I was blind from birth, and the year I turned 7, my father left me in this home for blind girls. He told me he’ll be back soon to take me home, but he didn't return. I wept for days,” recalls Deepa (name changed), a student of the residential school run by the Hyderabad Karnataka Disabled Welfare Society. Having spent ten years at the Ambubai School for Blind Girls and securing 92 per cent in class 10, Deep says, “I feel that leaving me here was the best thing my father could have done for me.”

There are many like Deepa who would have been lost but for the NGO by Dattu Agarwal who is blind himself.

Sadly, over 100 blind girl students today are living in threat of losing their home. Agarwal, strapped for funds, has been struggling to complete the construction of a building where he can shift his students.

Help Dattu Agarwal complete the construction of his school and give blind girls a chance at a future, which even their own families denied them. Donate now.

You can make a donation easily through UPI, all debit/credit cards and net banking.

Ambubai Residential School for Blind Girls was started in a rented building in 2007. The school has been a beacon of hope for countless blind girls, many of whom have faced horrific abuse and discrimination owing to their condition.

From darkness to light

Being born a girl in many parts of the country is still seen as a curse and if the girl child is blind the discrimination from society and family becomes even worse. These girls are denied their right to education and are considered a burden. But Agarwal after having faced hardships and discrimination himself, saw immense ability in blind girl children.

“When a blind boy or a blind girl is born, parents consider them as a burden on them. So, what they do is, they abandon such kids on the road and leave forever”, says Agarwal narrating the plight of blind children in rural India. The condition of blinds girls is far worse. “We often consider girls as second-class citizens. (For parents) blind girls are a tremendous burden, and they don’t educate them. Without education, there is no future for visually impaired girls”, Agarwal adds. “68% of the blind population lives in rural areas and therefore are deprived of education to this day” Agarwal says. According to him, education is the only way that blind children can move past the stigma and build a productive and independent life for themselves.

Why donate to the NGO

Hyderabad Karnataka Disabled Welfare Society started the school in 2007 in a rented building but the building is not disability-friendly and we face many problems. Moreover, being a rented space there is a risk of eviction.

“We purchased this piece of land, but due to financial problems we cannot complete the construction work. We are on the verge of stopping all work if we do not get urgent funds, and this will remain unfinished”, says teary eyed Agarwal.

“I request you with folded hands, donate in large numbers and help the blind girls” Agarwal pleads.

Your donation to the nonprofit can ensure a safe shelter and quality education for hundreds of girls in future. Your support can save blind girls from a bleak future.

During a detailed visit to the Hyderabad Karnataka Disabled Welfare Society (HKDWS), we observed the heartfelt efforts put forth to enhance the lives of blind girls through education and care.

Located in a facility that currently houses both a school and a hostel, HKDWS offers education up to the 10th grade for girls from underprivileged rural backgrounds. The selection process for these beneficiaries is meticulous, involving application scrutiny and home visits to ensure that those most in need are allowed to study and thrive.

The school employs five teachers, including a physical education instructor who proudly noted the girls' participation and success in district-level sports events. These activities, along with annual cultural programs, not only showcase their talents but also build confidence and a sense of community among the students.

During our visit to the construction site, we observed that the ground floor is already constructed, featuring essential facilities that promise a better learning and living environment for the girls.

Check out some pictures showcasing the development below!

The students expressed immense satisfaction with their education and care at HKDWS. The move to the new building is eagerly anticipated by both students and staff, symbolizing a new chapter of opportunities.

Your support can enable HKDWS to complete their new facility, ensuring that many more girls like those currently benefiting from the school can escape a life of neglect and achieve their full potential.

Donate now and help secure a nurturing and empowering space for these deserving students.

The support of our incredibly generous donors has allowed us to complete the ground floor of the new disability-friendly building!

This is the first step to providing a safe, inclusive environment for the 100 girls with visual impairments who currently reside in an ill-equipped building, as well as under threat of possible eviction.

See below some images directly from the ground of the efforts your contributions have sustained.

But there's still more work to be done! Donate now to provide Hyderabad Karnataka Disabled Welfare Society with the funds to complete work on the first floor and accommodate more girls with visual impairments.
