Shivaprakash went on to complete his Master’s degree and eventually founded the Divya Jyothi Charitable Trust, an organisation born out of personal struggle and driven by a powerful mission, to educate and empower blind girls, who are among the most neglected and marginalised in society.

Education is survival

In communities where gender and disability intersect, blind girls face deep-rooted prejudice and extreme isolation. Many are denied even basic schooling and are left dependent on family members for the rest of their lives. Recognising this, Divya Jyothi began with a simple yet radical step: to provide blind girls with computer training so they could access the digital world and open doors to employment.

But the journey didn’t stop there. The NGO went on to launch a braille transcription centre, ensuring girls have access to learning materials that suit their needs. As Shivaprakash says, “Without education, no one can do anything. That's why education is even more important for blind girls.” Education isn’t just about literacy, it’s about self-worth, decision-making, mobility, and freedom. It’s about giving these girls the same right to participate in society that sighted individuals often take for granted.

From rejection to respect

In a country where blind girls are often treated as liabilities, Divya Jyothi is rewriting their futures. Over 1,000 girls have graduated from the Trust’s training centres. Many of them come from families that had almost given up on them. Today, these same girls are government employees, corporate professionals, and role models in their communities.

More than 200 graduates have secured jobs in the public sector. Over 300 are now employed in private companies. Every success story is proof that with the right support, blind girls don’t just survive, they thrive. “Most girls are neglected by their families. This is a major challenge for them,” says Shivaprakash. By providing them with skills and confidence, Divya Jyothi is turning neglect into empowerment and helplessness into hope.
