Story

WWF-India has been a leader in wildlife conservation for over five decades, working to sustain the natural world for the benefit of people and nature.

Today, we shine a light on our tiger conservation efforts—a critical front in the bigger battle against wildlife extinction and habitat loss.

Why Save the Tigers?

The tiger is a keystone species. As an apex predator, the big cat plays a crucial role in maintaining ecosystem balance by keeping herbivore populations in check. When the tiger population of a forest thrives, the habitat flourishes. This benefits all the members of the ecosystem—including humans.

Tigers once numbered over 100,000 around the world but plummeted to an alarming low of 3,200 in 2010. The numbers have since improved to around 5,870. More than half of these (3,682) live in India, but they continue to face threats to their survival. Degradation of habitat, loss of connectivity between protected areas, human-wildlife conflict, poaching, and illegal wildlife trade are some of them. There may have been an uptick in India’s tiger population, but the work is far from over. We need to sustain this growth and build on it.

 What Does WWF-India Do?

  • Tracking and Monitoring: Employing camera traps to study tiger behaviour and movement, and estimate populations and demographics, in collaboration with state forest departments and the NTCA.
  • Reducing Human-Tiger Conflict: Offering immediate financial support as interim relief to victims of cattle loss or human injuries/fatalities caused by tigers. This plays a critical role in preventing retaliatory killings.
  • Community Engagement: Training community volunteers to act as first responders in instances of straying tigers and rescue missions. WWF-India also implements sustainable livelihood programmes to reduce communities' dependency on forest resources.
  • Securing Connectivity: Conserving corridors that connect protected areas across India. WWF-India is a member organization in the Coalition for Wildlife Corridors, a collaborative network of people and organizations working to advance connectivity conservation.
  • Fighting Illegal Wildlife Trade: Collaborating with partners like TRAFFIC India to monitor, investigate, and curb illegal wildlife trade. This includes conducting capacity-building workshops for enforcement agencies.

What Does Your Support Achieve?

Individual actions have immense power. The smallest of contributions helps us preserve habitats and corridors for tigers.

WWF-India is actively working in 38 out of the 56 Tiger Reserves in the country. Together, we can secure tigers' survival and preserve our planet's invaluable biodiversity. Your support is crucial for the success of our efforts.
