In today’s digital world, does reading books still hold the same importance that they once did? The answer is a resounding YES.

For many government schools and public libraries in our country, a library is nothing more than just a storehouse of books and periodicals or even just a pile of books collecting dust.

Adhyayan Foundation began the read-aloud program in Goa in 2021, just as schools reopened post-COVID after 18 months.

With the Read Aloud Programme piloted in 2 districts of Karnataka from May 2022 to April 2023, we have seen the following impact:

426% rise in number of children visiting the libraries daily

120% rise in children visiting the libraries 3 - 4 times a week

100% of students say they are excited and look forward to the sessions

96% of students say they have started reading more books after attending the RA sessions

The NEP 2020 has stressed the need for mobilising the library so that it can support schools in providing children with holistic education. In line with this cause, the Rural Development and Panchayat Raj Department of Karnataka commissioned Adhyayan to start the Read-Aloud programme in Kodagu and Bengaluru Urban in 2022. Given the success of the programme in Bengaluru Urban and Kodagu, we are expanding this programme to 4 additional districts.
