Story

There are around 50,000 + children living in the Kannaginagar slum Rehabilitation colony. The parents of these children work as laborers and earn between Rs. 7000/- to Rs.10000/- a month which is hardly sufficient to take care of the food expenses. Due to the low income, the parents are unable to cater to the essential needs such as safety, nutritional food, education etc. to name a few. The children are growing up in poverty, indiscipline, abuse, and violence as familiar faces. Weighed down by the burdens of life, the parents think that education is a luxury which cannot be afforded. Hence, the children end up being deprived of basic education. About 40% of the children who go to neighboring government schools, go to school for the sake of going, and as they get into high school the dropout rate increases. Besides, the crime, violence and regular fights in the community is so high that children end up being influenced it.

HOPE foundation runs the HOPE Foundation Matriculation School, which is a free English medium school situated right in the heart of the Kannaginagar Slum Resettlement Colony, Chennai. The School provides continued quality education to 430+ students enrolled in the school so that the students progress to become gainfully employed citizens of country. The school also develops the competencies of the students and builds their confidence in order  to perform well and excel in their studies and lives.

HOPE school has  adopted different teaching strategies such as think pair share, open ended questions, effective questioning, problem-based learning etc which  provide opportunities for students to think and come up with solutions for real world problems.

HOPE School has also appointed a child counselling who provides psycho social support to the students and also teaches soft skills for middle and high school students. HOPE school has also introduced vocational skills like IT, computer hardware, for the middle and high school students and provides career guidance to the students. The mission of HOPE School is to educate and train the students in 21st century skills that would not only build their academic competence but also equip them with sustainable skills that will help them face problems when exposed to real life challenges.

Education through digital platform.

With the periodic rise and fall of Covid cases and the resultant closure of schools has impacted the studies of the students to a great extent. Generally, the underprivileged children from slum communities need no reason to discontinue education. However, with continuous intervention and follow up by the teachers of HOPE School, they have been able to connect and engage with almost 98% of students f the school. With intermittent hiatus on opening and closing on school, as a strategy, HOPE foundation has created lot of online and offline content for the students have also connected them with different digital platforms to improve their pronunciation, vocabulary and grammar in English.

HOPE foundation has introduced the students to Eduvahini and Talking Yak educational apps to learning their subjects. HOPE foundation also ensures that it provides best platform and opportunities to the 450+ students from HOPE school to learn and develop at par to with the privileged students, hence in the month of September 2021, introduced Talking Yak for the children to learn English. Talking yak is an app designed for students to learn English easily from their own language. Right now, ---# of students from HOPE school are studying. Children are happy to learn English from this app, it has different levels to learn. The app teaches grammar, phonics, pronunciation, and conversation through videos. The app is monitored by the Talking Yak staff and they send the children’s progress report every month.

Since the physical schools are not functioning on continued basis , the students are getting enough time in their homes which they utilize in developing their skills in spoken English. These children have progressed well. Students are also provided with lots of reading materials other than the one they have on the app to improve their English.

It’s been a wonderful journey for the children so far and they have developed a liking for the subject and want to excel in English.

We appreciate the donations that we receive from donors like you that enables organisation like ours to help develop the children’s abilities and skills and prepare them for the future.
