It is often said that a visually challenged girl child bears the double burden of being a woman and being blind. She is seen as a burden on society and a drain on the family’s honour. Visually challenged girls who are born in a poor family often face a very challenging life, which can drive them towards hopelessness. They do not have access to the same quality of life, education, employment or personal well-being when compared to someone without a visual impairment.
Educational and employment opportunities available for blind persons are much fewer than those available for other people. Social and cultural barriers further prevent visually impaired women from taking up employment opportunities. There are few alternatives for sheltered employment or jobs that are conducive to visually impaired individuals.
BWS does not perpetuate the discrimination faced by visually challenged girls in their home and society. The girl children who are assisted by our organization come from various states of India such as Uttar Pradesh (UP), Bihar, Madhya Pradesh (MP), Chhattisgarh, Rajasthan, Punjab, West Bengal, Odisha as well as Delhi to reside at the hostel.
We run a very clean, hygienic and professionally managed high-quality hostel for the visually challenged girls with free boarding and lodging facilities. It is situated at Swaroop Nagar, Delhi. We do not charge any payment from them and hence the girls can put their entire energy on going up higher with their education without financial burden, stress or guilt.
Our hostel facilities are a lifeline for 40 visually challenged girls. These girls come from most marginalized and poorest of the poor families, with little or no family support.
The hostel has been designed to provide our girls with a comfortable and homely life, which includes personal beds, well-ventilated rooms and clean toilets. The infrastructure is designed to be appropriate for residents with visual impairment.
The Blind Welfare Society believes in the empowerment of visually impaired girls. This hostel facility is like a lifeline for the 30 girls and gives them comfort and safety away from their home. Despite being away from their loved ones, the affection, guidance and care they receive, relentlessly drives them to be competitive and not see their disability as a bane to the society. The guidance and camaraderie in the hostel propel them to excel and be a productive citizen of the country.
