Since 2013 we have been working on building SEL – Social Emotional Learning competencies in students from government schools of Mumbai city. A simple practice of reading aloud storybooks to 25 students then has flourished into a thriving initiative of structured and joyful SEL sessions that now reaches 5000+ students across 19 government schools in Mumbai, annually.
Although at Apni Shala “impact” takes the form of growth in self awareness, self management, social awareness, relationship building and responsible decision making abilities, as a team we feel that the following classroom conversation captures the essence of our work:
Sarika*, an Apni Shala facilitator, once shared that a student from grade 5 came up to her and said, "Aap meri maa jaisi ho (you are like a mother to me.)" This earnest sentence by this little girl caught Sarika by surprise.
Later over a one on one conversation with that very same student it came out that her mother had passed away and her father was in jail for the murder. The little girl was living with her extended family. For her this very SEL session was a safe space. Sarika was glad that she spoke to the little girl after that day’s SEL session. She further added that that little girl’s insights (during the SEL sessions) have been continuing to add so much to the (class) discussions.
Now, how must have this little girl felt to have sat through a Math or History classroom with such an unprocessed experience? Would she have been able to learn? Would she have reached her full potential? Many students from innumerable underserved communities experience what this little girl experiences. Won’t it be nice to have an Apni Shala didi or bhaiya for them as well?
Sometimes life at such a young age throws challenges that are beyond our comprehension. Many children and youth who are responding to systemic poverty, experience struggles similar to the above on a daily basis; and they still come and sit through the school hours in our country. In the light of such diverse lived realities, while some are blessed with systems of care and support, many are not.
Childhood and adolescence are critical developmental stages for mental health, and the environment in which they grow has an impact on their well-being and growth. India has the most number of children and adolescents worldwide, with 34.8% of its population coming into the age bracket of 0 to 19 years (2021.) However, our schooling systems may not be fully equipped to address this crucial social emotional gap.
Therefore, essentially, Apni Shala is working towards building a caring and compassionate school for students from the most marginalized communities by providing an hour long SEL session per week to each grade in each of its partner government schools in Mumbai.
So, be a Mental Health Ambassador in Apni Shala’s annual campaign that invites one and all to stand up for its students - be an ambassador for their well-being and growth.
Last year (2023-24), we raised INR 18 lakhs through this campaign - that supported our costs for learning materials, training, SEL facilitation and day to day supplies and maintenance.
Each donation, irrespective of the size of the amount, will make a huge difference to our operations.
