Humanitarian Home

The number of homeless and destitute men, women and children in our cities living under appalling conditions, in the streets is quite shocking. They are deprived of basic necessities, often ending up in premature deaths, diseases and not to mention crippling poverty. Thankfully, the Police pick them up and take them to one or the other humanitarian home in Bangalore. RVM Transit Home in Hennur is one such place, supported by Senior Citizens Bangalore. RVM Home is situated in Chikkagubbi village, Hennur, Bangalore where a large number of mentally and physically challenged elderly and young men and women stay.

Senior Citizens Bangalore assists the RVM Foundation Humanitarian Home in providing food, shelter, medical care and a hygienic environment for the recovery and rehabilitation of its destitute inmates. Many of the residents are mentally ill and are on medication. SCB provides infrastructural facilities such as bedding, solar heater, borewell, and water harvesting. Nutritious food is provided to them with compassion and adequate nutrient requirements of the residents are achieved.

Since most of inmates are suffering from very poor health and several physical disabilities, Senior Citizens have focused on intervention with nutrition and medical help. In order to build and improve their immune system SCB started giving nutritious food by providing vegetables, fruits and eggs in their regular meals and to reduce their dependence on medical treatment. SCB also conducts eye check up to the residents and if necessary glasses are also provided. Medical check ups are also conducted for all the residents.

Fruits of all kinds are provided regularly with curds or lassi every day. This has brought in a vast improvement in their health and it is visibly evident. The positive energy is clearly visible, and the participation of some of the inmates in some of the events is truly satisfying. Special food is provided to inmates on festivals or birthdays of our members

The organisation is trying to provide better facilities and infrastructure, but it has not been possible due to lack of funds.

Significant improvement in the physical and mental health of the 129 inmates by the provision of healthy and nutritious meals, medicines and health care, and emotional support in a stable and secure environment has been seen.

Once the resident is stabilised, he or she is usually moved to a more permanent residence at another Home or NGO.
