WHY PALGHAR?
Palghar has a total of 1008 villages and 3818 sub-villages governed by 477-gram panchayats, the local governing body in India. Scheduled tribes from India are considered most economically challenged as compared to other counterpart citizens of India.
The main occupation in the region is farming primarily the rain-fed cultivation type. Rain-fed cultivation allows farmers in this region to harvest successfully only one crop per year. Though farmers are at the source of the food chain being cultivators of food, still they struggle to meet the family need for food leading to malnutrition in the case of more than 50% of children.
· 84% Rural population.
· 37% Schedule Tribe.
· 53% Total children are underweight.
· 59% of kids suffer from stunted growth
Half of the population (50%) is below the poverty line. The Average Household income of Rural Palghar is INR 27,000 per annum with a family size of 5-6 members. Despite being just 100 kms from Mumbai, Palghar district has a major malnutrition problem in its inhabitants in general and in its children in particular.
At over 300 deaths per 1,000 children under age five years, Palghar’s children mortality rate is way higher than the national (50) and state average (28). Source
